Starting salary: $69,541.00 topping out at $113,848.00 (11 Steps) with benefits and uniforms

Requirements:

  1. U.S. Citizen
  2. Must be 21 Years of Age  (No Age Cap)
  3. Valid Driver’s License
    1. An Associates Degree or minimum 60 semester hours (From a Regionally Accredited College)
      - OR -
      This educational requirement may be satisfied by certain Military experience
      - a DD214/DD215 must be furnished
      *Two (2) years of active duty service in a branch of the United States Military or Eighteen (18) months of active duty service in the a branch of the United States Military in a designated combat zone.
      - OR -
      Have a minimum of four (4) years full-time continuous law enforcement (Police/Deputy) on the same department (must supply related information)
      - OR -
      Have a minimum of four (4) years continuous employment with the Will County Sheriff’s Office as a Correctional Officer AND 30 hours of regionally accredited college credits.
  4. No felony or certain misdemeanor convictions from any jurisdiction

Must establish residency in Will County within 2 years from date of appointment.

The Testing Process:

A written test, power card test, a 32-page long application, personality evaluation screening, a polygraph exam, an in-depth background investigation, and an interview with the Will County Merit Commission Board. After you successfully pass the testing process and interview, you will be placed on a 2-year certified list of applicants for the Sheriff. Once selected you will be interviewed by the Sheriff and will be sent for a full medical exam including a drug-screening test before being hired.

Written Test:

This will be conducted electronically from your computer.

The written test component for the position of Deputy Sheriff is designed to measure the applicant’s proficiency in the following areas:

  • Basic Math
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Basic Grammar
  • Incident Report Writing

A grade of 70% for EACH section is necessary for the applicant to pass and continue in the testing process.

Obtain P.O.W.E.R. Card. Further instructions will be given after passing the written exam. 

The Long Application:

The applicant will be mailed a 32-Page Long Application and information sheets to completely fill out with all the personal information as well as listing references and employment history for the past 10 years. This document must be notarized prior to mailing back to our office

Fingerprint Appointment:

You will be given an appointment date & time to come into our office to be fingerprinted and photographed.  You will also be required to bring the original/copy of the following items: Original/copy of your Birth Certificate, High School or GED diploma.  Bring the original Social Security Card, Driver’s License and FOID Card. Also, Law Enforcement certificate from academy if applicable. Your naturalization certificate if not born a US Citizen if applicable.

Personality Evaluation:

Applicants will be emailed an information sheet to make an appointment for their personality evaluation. The result of this test is a “recommended” or “not recommended”. Applicant must be recommended to continue in the process.

Polygraph Exam:

Applicant will be emailed information to make an appointment for their polygraph exam. Applicant must pass polygraph exam to continue in the process.

In-Depth Background Investigation:

A mail-out is completed from the Long Application. An investigator conducts a background investigation on applicant and writes up a report. You will be notified by email once this is completed.

Oral Interviews:

Applicant will be scheduled for an Oral Interview with the Merit Board and if successful, will be placed on a 2-year certified list of applicants for the Sheriff. Once selected you will be contacted by the Sheriff’s office for an interview.

Medical Exam:

Applicants will be sent for a full medical exam including a drug-screening test before being hired.

Post Employment Information:

Once hired as a Will County Sheriff's Office Deputy, the applicant will receive the following training:

  1. Sixteen weeks of academy training as of January 2023
  2. Fourteen weeks of Patrol Field training
  3. Forty hours of annual In-Service training
  4. After the initial phase, the Deputy will choose his/her assignment by rank seniority.
  5. Road Deputies work a 12 hour shift, either 6 am to 6 pm or 6 pm to 6 am.

SICK TIME:

  • 8 hours sick time for each month worked

 

VACATION:

  • After 1 year of service=80 hours vacation
  • After 5 years of service=120 hours vacation
  • After 10 years of service=160 hours vacation
  • After 15 years of service=200 hours vacation

 PERSONAL TIME:

  • 0-4 years of service=16 hours
  • 5 through 9 years of service=24 hours
  • 10+ years of service=32 hours
